GCMS Notes Processing Time & Tracking
GCMS Notes Processing Time — How Long Does It Take?
There are two different timelines to understand: how long IRCC takes to process your application, and how long it takes to receive your records (GCMS notes) once you make an access request. This guide explains both, using official IRCC information only. Every statement below is sourced from IRCC, with references at the end of the page.
How long to receive your GCMS notes (the access request)
When you request your records under the Access to Information Act or the Privacy Act, IRCC has 30 days to respond to a formal request. This period may be extended in certain circumstances — for example, when a request involves a large number of records or requires consultations — and IRCC will tell you about any extension, and its length, within 30 days of receiving the request.[1] Requests are made through IRCC’s ATIP Online Request tool or in writing.[2]
Start your GCMS notes request
We prepare and submit your request to IRCC and, where required, act as your authorized representative.
Order GCMS NotesHow your application processing time works
Your application processing time is separate from the access request. According to IRCC, your processing time starts the day IRCC receives your complete application and ends when IRCC makes a decision. It may vary depending on how many applications IRCC receives or if your application is complex, and an application may be delayed or returned if it is not complete.[3]
IRCC also notes that you will get an acknowledgement of receipt (AOR) letter or email after it receives your application and checks that it is complete.[3] You can check the current, application-specific estimates with IRCC’s official processing-times tool.[3]
Why your GCMS notes help with delays
The application status tracker shows only high-level statuses, such as “Received” or “In progress”, with review sections like background verification.[4] Your full records contain much more than these high-level statuses, which is why applicants experiencing delays often request a complete copy of their file to see where their application stands.

The access request and your application are handled separately; your application processing time runs from when IRCC receives your complete application until it makes a decision.[3]
Why is my application taking longer than expected?
IRCC states processing time may vary depending on how many applications it receives or if your application is complex, and can be delayed if your application is not complete.[3]
